‘Aesop in the Shades’ Furnishing Fabric, c.1766, linen and cotton, plate printed in china blue, Victoria and Albert Museum.
This furnishing fabric is decorated with scenes from David Garrick’s play ‘Lethe’, which was first performed in London in 1740. The lady in the scene is accompanied by a young black page boy, which was a common image in paintings and prints of the period -  black boys were often employed by white households, particularly by women, during the 18th century. Throughout the century, images of black people were associated with exoticism and luxury, which was in sharp contrast to the harsh realities which characterised the day to day experience of racism of many black people in Europe.
